Detroit Casinos Generate $109.72 Million As MotorCity Posts The Fastest Growth

Detroit casino revenue mapped before sunrise

Detroit’s three commercial casinos generated $109.72 million in aggregate revenue during August 2026, with physical casino gaming providing almost the entire total.

MGM Grand Detroit remained the market leader, but MotorCity Casino recorded the fastest year-over-year growth. Hollywood Casino at Greektown moved in the opposite direction, reporting a decline in table-game and slot revenue despite producing the highest retail sportsbook receipts among the three properties.

The monthly figures show a Detroit casino market growing moderately rather than uniformly. Combined table-game and slot revenue increased 3% from August 2025 but declined 2.5% from July 2026.

The results also reinforce the difference between Detroit’s physical casinos and Michigan’s broader digital gaming market. Retail sportsbook activity represented less than 1% of Detroit’s reported August casino revenue, while online betting and iGaming operate at a substantially larger statewide scale.

Detroit Casino Revenue Reached $109.72 Million In August

According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board’s August revenue report, Detroit’s three casinos generated $108.86 million from table games and slot machines.

Retail sportsbooks added $863,913 in qualified adjusted gross receipts, bringing total reported aggregate revenue to $109.72 million.

Revenue CategoryAugust 2026 Result
Table Games And Slots$108.86 million
Retail Sports Betting QAGR$863,913
Combined Aggregate Revenue$109.72 million

The distinction between the two categories is important. Table-game and slot revenue represents money retained by the casinos from physical gaming after customer winnings are accounted for. Retail sportsbook qualified adjusted gross receipts include additional regulatory adjustments and should not be confused with the amount wagered.

Customers placed $7.21 million in retail sports wagers at the three casinos during August. The properties recorded $876,492 in gross sportsbook receipts before reporting $863,913 in qualified adjusted gross receipts.

The $7.21 million handle was therefore not revenue. Most of that money was returned to customers through winning wagers.

MGM Grand Detroit Retained The Largest Market Share

MGM Grand Detroit generated $52.90 million from table games and slot machines during August, an increase of 2.3% from the same month in 2025.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board assigned MGM a 48% share of Detroit’s commercial casino market. That placed it well ahead of MotorCity at 31% and Hollywood Casino at Greektown at 21%.

Hollywood Casino at Greektown$22.19 million-2.6%21%

MGM’s lead reflects the property’s scale and established position in Detroit. Its August table and slot revenue was approximately $19.1 million higher than MotorCity’s and more than twice the amount reported by Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

However, the market-share result does not mean MGM experienced the strongest momentum. Its 2.3% annual increase trailed MotorCity’s growth rate substantially.

The August figures consequently present two different performance measures. MGM remained the largest business by revenue, while MotorCity improved most rapidly compared with its own result from one year earlier.

MotorCity Casino Recorded The Fastest Annual Growth

MotorCity generated $33.77 million in table-game and slot revenue, rising 8.3% from August 2025.

That was the strongest year-over-year percentage increase among Detroit’s three commercial casinos. It also exceeded the market’s combined 3% growth rate.

The monthly report does not identify one specific reason for MotorCity’s improvement. Revenue can be influenced by attendance, customer spending, game mix, promotional activity, events and the comparison with the same month one year earlier.

An 8.3% increase therefore should not automatically be attributed to one campaign, renovation or customer segment without additional operational evidence.

The result nevertheless suggests that MotorCity captured a larger portion of Detroit’s annual market growth. MGM added revenue at a slower rate, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown’s decline reduced the combined gain.

MotorCity’s performance will be more meaningful if it continues across several reporting periods. A single strong month can reflect timing or volatility, particularly for table games, where results can change according to both customer activity and game outcomes.

For now, August gives MotorCity the clearest positive movement in the local market without changing the overall revenue ranking.

Hollywood Casino At Greektown Reported A Mixed Result

Hollywood Casino at Greektown generated $22.19 million from table games and slots, declining 2.6% from August 2025.

That made it the only one of the three Detroit properties to report a year-over-year decrease in its principal casino-gaming segment.

Its retail sportsbook produced a different result.

Hollywood Casino at Greektown reported $342,921 in qualified adjusted gross receipts from retail sports wagering. MotorCity followed with $262,761, while MGM reported $258,231.

The sportsbook ranking was therefore the reverse of the table-and-slot revenue ranking. Detroit’s smallest casino by physical gaming revenue generated the largest retail sportsbook QAGR during the month.

That comparison needs perspective. The difference between the three sportsbooks was measured in tens of thousands of dollars, while the difference between their casino floors was measured in tens of millions.

Retail sportsbook performance was not large enough to change the overall market positions:

  • Hollywood Casino at Greektown led retail sportsbook QAGR by approximately $80,000 over MotorCity.
  • MGM generated almost $30.7 million more table and slot revenue than Hollywood Casino at Greektown.
  • Combined retail sportsbook QAGR represented approximately 0.8% of Detroit’s aggregate August casino revenue.

The sportsbook result is still operationally relevant, but it was a secondary component of the three properties’ overall business.

Detroit’s Physical Casino Market Grew Despite A Monthly Decline

Combined table-game and slot revenue increased 3% from August 2025 but decreased 2.5% from July 2026.

Those comparisons are not contradictory. They use different reference periods.

The annual increase indicates that the Detroit casino market performed better than it did during August of the previous year. The monthly decline shows that revenue slowed from July.

For the first eight months of 2026, Detroit table-game and slot revenue was 2% higher than during the equivalent period in 2025. That year-to-date result provides a steadier measure than one monthly comparison.

The figures describe a resilient but mature casino market. Revenue is expanding, although not at the double-digit rate recorded by MotorCity individually in August.

This pattern is consistent with the wider physical casino performance examined in gclubgod.com’s analysis of how U.S. commercial gaming revenue reached $20.39 billion in Q2. Traditional casino gaming remained the country’s largest regulated commercial gaming segment even as online casinos grew more quickly.

Detroit follows that broader pattern in an especially useful way. The city’s casinos continue generating substantial in-person revenue despite operating in a state with mature online casino and mobile sportsbook markets.

Retail Sports Betting Revenue Declined 30.4%

Detroit’s retail sportsbooks accepted $7.21 million in wagers during August and reported $863,913 in qualified adjusted gross receipts.

Retail sportsbook QAGR decreased 30.4% from August 2025 and 7.1% from July 2026.

The decline demonstrates why sportsbook handle and sportsbook revenue must be separated. Handle measures the amount wagered, while revenue depends on the amount retained after winning bets and applicable adjustments.

A sportsbook can accept more wagers without necessarily generating more revenue. Customer results, the types of markets selected, pricing and promotional credits can all influence the amount retained.

Detroit’s August retail sportsbook figures were:

Hollywood Casino at Greektown$342,921
MotorCity Casino$262,761
MGM Grand Detroit$258,231
Combined$863,913

Detroit Fiber Room, Statewide Mobile Reach

The start of the college football and NFL seasons can increase sportsbook activity, but August primarily covers preseason and early college events rather than a complete month of regular-season NFL wagering.

September will offer a clearer view of how the 2026 football calendar affects Detroit’s retail sportsbooks. Even then, greater handle will not guarantee higher revenue.

Online Gaming Operates At A Different Scale In Michigan

Retail sports betting at Detroit’s casinos represents only one part of Michigan’s gaming market.

The latest complete digital report available for comparison covered July 2026. Michigan’s commercial and tribal online operators generated $302.77 million in iGaming gross receipts and $43.36 million in online sports-betting gross receipts during that month.

Combined online gross receipts reached $346.13 million, according to the regulator’s July Michigan iGaming and online betting report.

Those figures cannot be inserted directly into Detroit’s August total. They cover a different month, include both commercial and tribal operators, and use digital reporting categories that differ from the city’s retail casino results.

They nevertheless demonstrate the difference in scale between retail and online channels.

Michigan’s July online sportsbook handle reached $355.2 million. Detroit’s three retail sportsbooks accepted $7.21 million during August. Although the reporting periods do not match, the gap illustrates how strongly sports wagering has shifted toward mobile access.

Online casino gaming has also become a major statewide revenue channel. Michigan’s July iGaming adjusted gross receipts totaled $290.65 million, compared with $108.86 million generated from physical casino games in Detroit during August.

This does not prove that online casinos are replacing Detroit properties. Physical casinos operate hotels, restaurants, event spaces and entertainment venues that digital platforms cannot reproduce. The channels also involve different operators and customer behavior.

The results instead show that Michigan supports two large casino systems simultaneously: a three-property commercial market centered in Detroit and a statewide online market involving commercial and tribal partners.

Detroit Received $17.1 Million In Casino-Related Payments

Detroit’s casino market also generates direct public revenue.

The three casinos paid approximately $8.8 million in state gaming taxes on August table-game and slot activity, compared with $8.6 million one year earlier.

They also submitted $17.1 million in wagering taxes and development-agreement payments to the City of Detroit.

Under Michigan law, Detroit’s commercial casinos remit 19% of adjusted gross receipts from table games and slots through wagering taxes. The state receives 8.1%, while Detroit receives 10.9%. The city also receives payments required by development agreements.

That structure explains why the $17.1 million city figure is higher than a simple application of the municipal wagering-tax percentage. It includes both wagering taxes and development-agreement payments.

Retail sports betting is taxed separately. August sportsbook activity generated $32,656 in state taxes and $39,913 for Detroit.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board’s September license-renewal announcement confirmed that a combined 8.4% tax applies to retail sportsbook receipts, along with annual regulatory fees.

Public payments should not be confused with total casino revenue. They represent specific tax and contractual obligations calculated after the casinos report their gaming results.

Detroit casino revenue oversight model

All Three Detroit Casino Licenses Were Renewed

The August revenue report arrived days after the Michigan Gaming Control Board unanimously renewed the operating licenses for MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

The vote occurred during the board’s September 8 meeting. Regulators reviewed each casino’s financial condition, operating practices and compliance with responsible-gaming requirements before approving the renewals.

The licenses are reviewed annually and will next come before the board in September 2027.

Revenue performance alone does not determine whether a casino retains its license. Regulators also examine game integrity, financial suitability, internal controls and compliance with the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act.

The timing creates an important connection between market performance and oversight. Detroit’s casinos are significant revenue and tax generators, but their continued operation depends on meeting regulatory standards rather than simply producing strong monthly totals.

That requirement becomes more important as physical casinos and online platforms compete within the same state. Customers need clear distinctions between licensed operators and unapproved gambling sites, while regulators must oversee increasingly different technical and operational systems.

Revenue Growth Should Be Matched By Effective Player Protection

Detroit’s casinos remain subject to responsible-gaming obligations as part of their annual licensing reviews.

Michigan operates a voluntary Disassociated Persons List covering the three Detroit commercial casinos. Participants pledge not to enter MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino or Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

The state also maintains a separate responsible-gaming database for internet gaming and online sports betting. That distinction reflects the different ways people access physical and digital products.

The systems should be clearly explained because exclusion from one gaming channel does not necessarily imply exclusion from every form of gambling available in Michigan.

Casino employees also play an important role. Staff training, identification procedures and accessible information can help make responsible-gaming policies function in practice rather than existing only as regulatory language.

Adults experiencing gambling-related harm can call or text 1-800-GAMBLER for free and confidential assistance. Revenue growth does not reduce the need for these protections. It increases the number of customer interactions that casinos and regulators must manage responsibly.

MotorCity’s Growth Is The Key Result To Watch

Detroit’s $109.72 million August total reflects a commercial casino market that remains stable despite the growth of online gaming.

MGM Grand Detroit maintained a substantial revenue lead and controlled almost half of the physical casino market. MotorCity posted the strongest annual growth, increasing table-game and slot revenue by 8.3%. Hollywood Casino at Greektown declined in its core casino segment but led the comparatively small retail sportsbook category.

The broader market increased 3% from August 2025 and 2% across the first eight months of the year. Those gains are meaningful, but they point to gradual expansion rather than a sudden change in Detroit gambling demand.

MotorCity’s next results will show whether its August performance was a temporary monthly advantage or part of a longer competitive shift.

For Detroit, the most important measure extends beyond which casino ranks first. The durability of the market depends on stable revenue, enforceable licensing standards, transparent public payments and responsible-gaming systems capable of operating across both physical and digital channels.
